“There is growing scientific evidence documenting the health risks associated with marijuana use including adverse effects on the lungs, the cardiovascular system, and possibly the immune and reproductive systems. However, I also understand the great importance of preserving the rights bestowed to the States.” 7/10/2011 (Link)
U.S. Sen. Sullivan: “My staff and I have had a couple of meetings with Governor Walker’s administration officials to try to work through the complexities of a state system where marijuana has been legalized by the vote of the people, so even though I didn’t vote for that, I recognize that it’s a vote of the Alaskan people so I very much respect that. And then the federal system that hasn’t gotten there, whether it’s banking, whether it’s criminal laws and how you mesh the two. It’s not 100% clear where we would have to change federal laws to enable states that have chosen to do what Alaska did, like Oregon, like Colorado, to move forward. So we are working with the federal agencies, we are working with the state of Alaska, we’re working with some of the other states, I’m working with some of the other senators on first understanding what the exact issues are and how to address them. It is complex, like I said.” 12/28/2015 (Link)

“In a release, Young stated that his stance on medical and recreational marijuana “has always been an issue of states’ rights.” The statement reiterates sentiments made in 2013 when Young signed onto a bill that sought to protect marijuana users from federal prosecution.”
3/24/15 ““My thing is, I’m not a big fan of the marijuana,” said Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young Friday. “I will tell you though, I believe the states have a right to do as they wish to do. That goes back to states rights.”” (Link)
12/21/15 “Rep. Don Young’s spokesman, Matt Shuckerow, said that Young supports current legislation that would remove marijuana from the list of Schedule I controlled substances and that he supports states’ rights in regards to marijuana policy. At the same time, Young “believes that we need to consider safe, responsible restrictions on advertisements,” Shuckerow said.” (Link)
