Minnesota Department of Health Adds PTSD to Medical Marijuana Condition List

The Minnesota Department of Health requires a certified practitioner of medical marijuana to register PTSD patients on their website, but now veterans in Minnesota are able to find potential relief from medical cannabis. Although PTSD has been a qualifying medical condition for many states for a while, some like Minnesota have taken a while to add the condition.

As of July 1, Minnesotans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can register to receive medical cannabis through the state’s medical cannabis program. Patients certified by a health care provider as having PTSD can start receiving medical cannabis at patient cannabis centers beginning Aug. 1, according to information released by the Minnesota Department of Health this week.

A patient seeking to participate in the program must first visit a health care practitioner who can go to the Minnesota Department of Health website and certify the patient has one or more qualifying conditions. Once a provider certifies a patient, he or she can register on the MDH website to receive medical cannabis at one of the state’s eight locations, http://www.health.state.mn.us/topics/cannabis/patients/locations.html/. The closest cannabis patient center location to the Twin Towns is Minnesota Medical Solutions in Moorhead.

The state’s Office of Medical Cannabis relies on the professional judgment of the certifying health care practitioner to determine whether a patient has PTSD.

The state program will also add topical medications as an option. Cannabis manufacturers are developing cannabis patches, balms and lotions that are expected to be available later this year.

The Department of Health is also accepting requests to add new, qualifying medical conditions. The department accepts the requests between June 1 and July 31 each year.

Those interested in submitting a petition must complete the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program Petition to Add a Qualifying Medical Condition form, found at http://www.health.state.mn.us/topics/cannabis/rulemaking/2017peti tionc.pdf or http://www.health.state.mn.us/topics/cannabis/rulemaking/2017petition dm.pdf/.

Minnesota’s Medical Cannabis Review Panel will report on the public health benefits and risks of any proposed medical conditions by Nov. 1
