Sin City Marijuana, A Glimpse into a Memorable Night in Vegas

Sin City marijuana may end up being the best there is, especially after its first day of parties, music and very long and hot lines of enthusiastic customers. The sentiment in Las Vegas is that of people feeling liberated and having an independence they have been impatiently waiting for. Do you think it was a coincidence that Nevada sped through its legislation just before the Independence Day holiday?

In true Las Vegas fashion, a party atmosphere — complete with food and music — developed outside dispensaries late Friday night as lines formed ahead of the midnight sales.

Inside the dispensaries, it was a different kind of scene: Workers hustled to put the finishing touches on their displays and fully stock shelves with marijuana products before the avalanche of customers.

“This is not the first 12-hour shift I’ve worked,” said Jen McClaning, an employee at The Apothecary Shoppe on Flamingo Road. “We’re still pushing to get stuff done right now.” The time: 11:15 p.m.

Shortly before midnight, state Sen. Tick Segerblom waited inside Reef Dispensaries’ Western Avenue location behind the Las Vegas Strip. Outside, hundreds of people stood in a line that snaked around the massive building, which includes a cultivation and production facility.

Days earlier, Segerblom, a longtime champion of legalizing marijuana, had issued a warning to Amsterdam and Denver — boldly proclaiming that Las Vegas would become the recreational marijuana capital. On Friday night, he was all smiles during what he described as his “15 minutes of fame.” He was Reef’s first customer, surrounded by throngs of media cameras, at midnight.

“I think we are back to the ’60s,” he quipped minutes before stepping to the counter.

The general consensus among those waiting in lines: It’s about time. Paul Boisclair, 58, joined the Reef Dispensaries’ line at 10 p.m. to experience the party vibe he knew would exist. Boisclair said he’s been hoping and waiting for this day. “I’m a carpenter,” he said. “We smoke weed because our backs are sore.”

Two miles away, newly married couple Nicole and Dave Turner waited for their chance to buy marijuana at Oasis Medical Cannabis. The Minnesota residents said they couldn’t pass up this experience while enjoying their honeymoon in Las Vegas. “We just turned on the news and saw it and thought we should go down,” said Nicole Turner, who was donning a white veil for the occasion.
